“Will your Disaster Recovery plan work?”
DR tests should be performed after each
configuration change. However doing so is not practical. DR testing is pricy – between 30K$
to 1M$ a test, depends on the DR environment. Tests are business
disruptive, and in many cases they are business function
limited. Testing frequently is either not cost effective or
partial. DR Testing don’t
necessarily expose vulnerabilities in DR systems. A DR
test can “succeed” because it is timed to a time frame where
your system is less vulnerable, a real disaster event might happen in a less
convenient time for your DR environment. “Successful”
DR test can cover only partial business function, or can be
performed without full disconnection of production environment
and a real startup of the DR environment (in order to reduce
business risk). A real disaster might cause data corruption when
the DR system is started.
Another "successful" DR test result can occur
when companies are trying to reduce DR tests risks and costs.
For example, by not disconnecting or shutting down their
production environment completely. If the DR environment is not
configured properly, it can link by mistake to IT assets in the
production site. DR test will succeed, but when disaster
strikes, and the production environment will not be available
any more, recoverability issues will occur.
Because the environment is under constant
change - you can never rely on a test as being nothing more than
just a "point-in-time" verification of you Disaster Recovery
strategy verification.
Because in house and other solutions are not complete
DIY is not an option - In house developed solutions that verify DR
readiness are partial and flawed by definition. Would you feel
confident if your IT would develop your Antivirus or firewall
solution? Would it be always up to date with industry best
practices or new technologies introduced? Will you able to
handle new threats fast enough? Are you sure it really
works? Does it cover all known gaps? Does it provide business
service granularity, reporting capabilities or a view of your DR
topology?
Other solutions focus on specific aspects
of DR, or specific technologies. No other solution provide an
in-depth business continuity understanding of the DR world.
