NE Utilities Deploys Continuity
April 2, 2008

"Northeast Utilities’ production and disaster recovery (DR) datacenters are large, complicated, heterogeneous, environments with a myriad of interdependencies. Its environment covers three states: Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and includes both UNIX and Windows servers, as well as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and Sybase databases. The datacenters support and protect business services across the organization including ERP, supply chain and customer relationship management, as well as both “off-the-shelf” and “home-grown” utility specific applications."

In other words, in the real world there is no such thing as a 'graceful shutdown' during a true disaster event."

"More remarkable is what happens next. What is no surprise is that RecoverGuard always finds critical problems that impact the client's ability to recover. What is unusual is that Stone claims Continuity Software has a 100% conversion rate of clients who go from performing the assessment to buying the RecoverGuard software. Of course, when one considers that if one buys professional services from either EMC or Symantec to do a similar assessment, it would cost $150,000. Continuity Software claims that their assessment would not be as accurate or as fast as Continuity Software's $15,000 assessment so it is not a shock that companies are willing to lay out the $60K minimum to have RecoverGuard continually produce these reports."

Disaster Recovery Is a Disaster
November 19, 2007

"Disaster recovery simply doesn’t work.” Scary words from Gil Hecht, CEO of New York-based Continuity Software Inc., who claims that at least 60% of all disaster recovery (DR) tests bomb. If he were alone in his assessment, you could dismiss his view as simply that of a self- interested vendor. But Sean Derrington, director of storage management at Symantec Corp. in Cupertino, Calif., says that in his company’s poll of data center managers earlier this year, half of the respondents said their DR tests had failed. The reason? Primarily, it’s you or your staff, says Hecht. “IT people make changes all day long to operational systems,” he says. While they do test the changes in their production environments, it’s almost certain they don’t test them from a DR perspective, he asserts, even if they make the updates to the DR systems themselves. Why not test the DR side? Hecht answers with an analogy: “The only way you can test an airbag in your car is if you hit a tree.” In other words, you can’t test your DR systems without a major disruption to your daily production environment."
